Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When and where is the trek?

July 14–18, 2026 (Tuesday through Saturday) at the Wyoming Mormon Trail Sites, near the Sweetwater River in central Wyoming.

Who can participate?

Youth in the Parowan Utah Stake who are in 8th–12th grade. Adult leaders serve as Trek Mas, Pas, Aunts, and Uncles by calling.

How do I register?

Visit the Register page on this site. Youth need a parent or guardian to complete the form. Leaders register separately.

What should I bring?

Each participant needs a 5-gallon bucket (which doubles as your seat), pioneer clothing, sturdy broken-in walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and personal hygiene items. Check the Prepare page for the full list.

What is pioneer clothing?

Young women wear long skirts or dresses with long-sleeved blouses, aprons, and bonnets. Young men wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, suspenders, and hats. Light, breathable, natural-colored fabrics work best. No modern logos or athletic wear on the trail.

How physically demanding is the trek?

You will walk several miles each day pulling handcarts over uneven terrain. The monthly preparation guide (March–June) will help you build up your endurance gradually. Start walking now!

What about the heat?

Mid-July in Wyoming can be extremely hot. We plan to be on the trail by 6:00 AM and off the trail by 2:00 PM. Each handcart carries 5 gallons of water and 5 gallons of electrolyte replacement. Hydrate before you feel thirsty.

Can I bring my phone?

No personal electronics are allowed on the trail during trekking days. Leaders will have communication devices for emergencies. This helps everyone stay immersed in the pioneer experience.

What if there is a medical emergency?

At least two licensed healthcare professionals walk the entire trek. The nearest emergency facilities are SageWest Health Care in Lander, WY (40 min from Sixth Crossing) and Banner Wyoming Medical Center in Casper (1 hour from Martin's Cove).

What is the Women's Pull?

On Day 3 at Sixth Crossing, the young women and women leaders pull the handcarts without the help of the young men — commemorating the sacrifices of pioneer women and the 1856 rescue at the Sweetwater River.
